How to check a charity is registered in Kenya
Charities in Kenya are regulated by the Public Benefit Organizations Regulatory Authority (PBORA), which replaced the NGOs Co-ordination Board. It registers organisations under the Public Benefit Organizations Act, 2013, and the PBO Regulations, 2026 took effect in March 2026, with organisations registered under the old NGO law moving to the new framework.
PBORA publishes a list of registered organisations on its website. Ask the charity for its registration certificate, check the name against the list, and contact PBORA at [email protected] if something does not match. Smaller self-help groups and community groups are often registered with social services offices rather than PBORA, so ask them which certificate they hold.
Giving safely
- Give to a paybill, account or campaign page in the organisation’s name, not to a personal M-Pesa number you were sent privately.
- Read what the money is for and how much is needed. A clear budget is a good sign; a vague one is a reason to ask questions.
- After you give, follow the updates. Organisations that report back on how money was used are the ones worth supporting again.
