How to check a charity is registered in Uganda
NGOs in Uganda are regulated by the National Bureau for NGOs under the NGO Act, 2016. A registered NGO should be able to show you its certificate of registration and a valid permit to operate. Ask for both, and check the organisation name matches the one asking for money.
The Bureau has a service to verify documents it has issued, and publishes contacts you can use to confirm a registration: email [email protected] or call +256 313 287 300. Smaller community-based organisations register at district level, so ask them for their district registration and confirm it with the district office if you are unsure.
Giving safely
- Give through a channel in the organisation’s name, or a campaign page that shows who receives the money, rather than to a personal number you were sent privately.
- Read what the money is for and how much is needed. A clear budget is a good sign; a vague one is a reason to ask questions.
- After you give, follow the updates. Organisations that report back on how money was used are the ones worth supporting again.
Looking for help from a charity?

Questions people ask
How do I know if an NGO in Uganda is genuine?
Ask for its certificate of registration and current permit from the National Bureau for NGOs, check the name matches, and use the Bureau’s document verification service or contacts to confirm. Be wary of anyone who asks you to send money to a personal number instead of an account or page in the organisation’s name.
Who regulates charities in Uganda?
The National Bureau for NGOs, under the Ministry of Internal Affairs, registers and regulates NGOs under the NGO Act, 2016. Community-based organisations register at district level.
How can I donate to a charity in Uganda from abroad?
