How to give in Kenya
A practical guide to supporting a campaign, from choosing a need to confirming your payment.
Country-specific checks
For a harambee, check whether the committee’s target includes contributions already collected elsewhere. Confirm the intended recipient before approving an M-Pesa request.
Configured currencies: KES. Listed networks: M-Pesa. Availability depends on the campaign and checkout; this list does not guarantee a network is available when you give.
1. Choose a campaign
Open the country’s campaign listing. Read the need, location, budget, identity presented by the organiser and updates. If no campaign fits, browse other causes; donors are not automatically matched with beneficiaries.
2. Check the amount and payment method
Choose an amount in the displayed currency. Use only a method offered on the campaign. From abroad, check whether cards are available and review the conversion estimate before continuing.
3. Confirm your donation
Anonymous giving can hide your public name. It does not hide information needed to process payment. Check the recipient and total in the payment request; never share your wallet PIN with the organiser.
4. Wait for confirmation and follow the campaign
A pledge or pending request is not a successful payment. If it takes time, check the payment status and your payment account before trying again. Keep the reference and contact support if a debit remains unconfirmed. Follow the organiser’s updates afterwards.
From donation to withdrawal
- Mobile money
- Confirmed donations are credited before withdrawal fees. Collection costs are included in the withdrawal deduction. The donor’s operator may also charge a sending fee: check the total on your phone before entering your PIN.
- Cards and overseas donations
- When card payments are available, Stripe Checkout shows eligible methods and currencies. Actual processing fees are deducted before campaign credit. Conversion can change the credit; the estimate excludes later withdrawal deductions. Optional tips go to SenteMe, not the campaign.
- Withdrawals and wallet charges
- The standard deduction is 7.5%. Provider costs and rounding can increase it. The withdrawal screen shows the net payout and limits before confirmation. Cash-out or onward transfers from the wallet may cost extra.
- When are funds available?
- Payment success does not mean immediate withdrawal. Card funds must settle before they become available for withdrawal. The dashboard separates raised, processing and available balances. Identity verification, reviews and provider availability can delay withdrawal; no fixed time is guaranteed.
What does verification mean?
A badge indicates manual campaign review. Identity checks required for withdrawal are separate. Neither guarantees the project’s outcome or the eventual use of funds. Ask who receives the money and how spending will be explained. Do not assume a donation is tax deductible.
