HELP JESSIE JOY NALUGWA BREATHE AND SPEAK AGAIN Jessie Joy Nalugwa is a bright and loving 12-year-old girl whose life changed forever after a tragic playground injury. While playing at school, she was struck across the neck by a metallic swing, causing devastating injuries to her airway and vocal cords. Jessie was admitted to Mulago National Referral Hospital, Uganda's largest public teaching and specialized hospital, where she spent two weeks in the Intensive Care Unit fighting for her life. Emergency surgery revealed extensive damage to her airway, and doctors performed a tracheostomy to save her life. Today, Jessie depends on a tracheostomy tube to breathe and has lost her natural voice. She cannot speak like other children, and simple joys such as laughing, singing, answering questions in class, or calling out to her parents have been taken from her. Despite these challenges, Jessie has shown extraordinary courage. She has already undergone five complex reconstructive surgeries to rebuild her damaged airway. Her doctors have now recommended a final, highly specialized airway reconstruction with cartilage repair at Mayo Clinic in the United States. This surgery offers her the best chance to breathe without a tracheostomy tube and may also restore her ability to speak. For Jessie, this is more than surgery—it is the chance to return to school with confidence, laugh freely, speak again, and enjoy the childhood every child deserves.
